Serena Martin

Background

Hi, I’m Serena (she/her), a Registered Clinical Counsellor with Avery Therapy Centre. I was born and raised in Victoria, BC, on Lekwungen Territory. I identify as mixed race, a second generation immigrant, and a member of both the chronic illness and LGBTQ2S+ communities. These lived experiences shape the way I show up in the therapy room, with curiosity, care, and a deep respect for each person’s unique story.

Before becoming a counsellor, I spent many years immersed in dance and creative expression. Movement, creativity, and connection continue to influence how I understand emotion, identity, and healing. I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Psychology at the University of Victoria, and later earned my Master of Counselling from City University. Along the way, I worked on a crisis line and within nonprofit organizations, supporting people through moments of distress, transition, and growth.

I believe there is something deeply powerful about being able to share your story in a space where you feel safe and understood. Therapy can be a place to slow down, make sense of your experiences, and reconnect with yourself in meaningful ways. Outside of sessions, you will often find me listening to music, choreographing, spending time in nature, reading, or enjoying time with people I care about.

Therapeutic Approach

My approach to therapy is collaborative, flexible, and grounded in creating a space where you feel genuinely seen and heard. I understand that reaching out for support can feel vulnerable, and I aim to meet you with warmth, openness, honesty, and compassion.

I draw from a humanistic and person centered foundation, with the belief that you are the expert of your own life and have an innate capacity for growth and change. I integrate approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems, self compassion practices, somatic work, and Gottman therapy for relationships. Depending on your needs, this may involve exploring patterns, working through past experiences, building emotional awareness, strengthening relationships, or developing practical tools for navigating challenges.

I also hold awareness of the broader contexts that shape our lives, including cultural background, identity, and systemic influences. My work is trauma informed, culturally responsive, and affirming of neurodiversity, disability, and diverse identities.

Every therapy journey is different. Together, we can explore what matters most to you, move through what feels stuck, and support you in creating the kind of life and relationships you want.
