Genevieve Humphrey (she/her)

Background
Hi! My name is Genevieve, a Registered Clinical Counsellor at Avery Therapy Centre. My years of traveling, living, studying, and working across cultures and systems have fostered a deep appreciation for the significance of listening with openness, collaborating with intention, and honoring each person’s inner wisdom. I’ve dedicated much of my professional life to diverse roles that enabled me to support and connect with people across multicultural settings, enriching my understanding of how we seek connection, healing, and growth. At the same time, living with chronic pain, receiving a late ADHD diagnosis, and navigating a nonlinear healing journey have further deepened my empathy and strengthened my commitment to this work. These experiences inform the perspective I bring to therapy and inspire me to cultivate a space where clients can feel safe, supported, and genuinely empowered.
Clinically, I hold a master’s degree in counselling psychology, complemented by certifications in trauma-informed yoga and somatic-based practices. When I’m not in session, you may find me running along the seawall, cuddling my dog Dandelion, getting lost in a good book with coffee in hand, or daydreaming about one day creating an integrative healing centre with an animal sanctuary.
Therapeutic Approach
I see therapy as a space where you can be deeply witnessed, a place where all parts of you, especially those that feel scared, ashamed, or lost, are met with compassion and understanding. It’s often about making room for our most human experiences to be held gently with mindful awareness. In that tenderness, healing can begin, not through force, but rather through care.
My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, integrative, and strengths-based, with Internal Family Systems (IFS) often serving as a foundation for exploring and understanding inner experience. Rooted in an anti-oppressive, evidence-informed framework, my work is guided by a deep honoring of intersectionality and a commitment to culturally responsive, socially conscious care. As a trained yoga teacher and somatic therapist, I may gently offer mindfulness and body-based practices to support self-attunement and regulation when it feels safe and appropriate. Depending on what feels most helpful, our work might include elements of Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), Focusing, and/or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). I believe therapy is most effective when it’s collaborative and responsive, ultimately shaped by your pace, values, and preferences. Throughout this process, this work will invite you to trust your body, your voice, and your intuition.

“Compassion practice is daring. It involves learning to relax and allow ourselves to move gently toward what scares us. The trick to doing this is to stay with emotional distress without tightening into aversion, to let fear soften us rather than harden into resistance."
