Hanna Peterson (she/her)

Background
My name is Hanna Peterson, and I am an intern counsellor with Avery Therapy Center. I create non-judgemental spaces for listening and support through the counselling relationship. I am currently pursuing a Master of Counselling degree from City University in Vancouver B.C. As a Vancouver local, I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Counselling from UBC. I was fortunate to spend two years abroad at Humboldt University’s Mind and Brain program in Berlin, Germany. Experiencing Berlin’s celebration of diversity and culture ignited my love of counselling.
When I am not counselling, I love walking my giant dog, karaoke nights and trying new foods. I always find a way to bring creativity into my everyday routine. I am passionate about activism and fostering connections within the Queer and 2SLGBTQIA+ community with which I identify.
Therapeutic Approach
You may wish to work with me if you are looking for an accepting and open space for self-awareness, talking about relationships, sex, identity, work, self-esteem, or just feeling stuck. I am motivated to make our counselling sessions empowering for you, supporting the changes that you want to make in life. My work often focuses on values, self-acceptance, and client-directed action.
My counselling style fundamentally incorporates a person-centered social justice lens. My clients' perspectives, cultures and values are prioritized throughout our counselling relationship. I use an integrative therapeutic approach to adapt a variety of theoretical orientations and interventions to best suit my clients needs. The theories I draw from the most include ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), narrative therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, motivational interviewing, and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). An integrative approach allows me to work collaboratively with my clients to co-construct therapy that works for your needs.
