Michaela Deane

Background

My name is Mic (she/her), and I’m an intern counsellor at Avery Therapy Centre. Originally from Ireland, I moved to Canada in 2019 – a life transition that sparked a journey of self-discovery and growth.

I obtained my BA in Journalism before emigrating, where my passion for storytelling allowed me to focus on issues close to my heart, including 2SLGBTQ+ rights, reproductive justice, and mental health advocacy. I found purpose in helping people share their stories in ways that felt meaningful to them. This led me to work in communications, where I was drawn to nonprofits focused on community-based mental health, justice services, and addiction support. My interest in the intersection of 2SLGBTQ+ identities and substance use led me to co-found an organization dedicated to providing support in this space.

My capstone explores how personal, social, and systemic factors shape sexual desire for women in long-term queer relationships – and how therapists can better support this community, of which I am a part. My own lived experience with mental health challenges has deeply influenced my path as a counsellor, and the support I’ve received from counsellors over the years has been life-changing. I feel incredibly grateful to now be in a position to support others.

Therapeutic Approach

I am passionate about helping my clients discover their authentic selves, overcome challenges, and work toward becoming the people they want to be. Coming from a feminist, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive lens, I aim to help clients uncover meaning and purpose in their lives and explore the patterns that may leave them feeling stuck. By understanding the “why” behind our decisions and how our past shapes us, we can begin to unpack the heavy emotional pieces we carry, consider what to hold on to or let go of, and ultimately find ways to feel lighter.

In my work, I take a person-centered and collaborative approach, tailoring therapy to each client’s unique needs. I draw from a variety of therapeutic modalities, including but not limited to Psychodynamic Therapy, Attachment-Based Theories, Narrative Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). My goal is to create a foundation of trust and safety, offering an environment where clients feel respected, cared for, and comfortable exploring their inner worlds.

I believe that change is possible, but the path isn’t always straightforward. It’s never too late to rewrite your story, shift directions, or begin again – and I’m here to support you in that process.
