Sunny Sun

Background

My name is Sunny Sun. As a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, I support individuals, youth, couples, and seniors through healing and meaningful change. My work is grounded in both evidence-based Western modalities and holistic Eastern perspectives, allowing me to offer a culturally integrative and strength-based approach. I have extensive experience guiding clients through trauma, grief, relational challenges, and life transitions—helping survivors of family violence reclaim safety, supporting those grieving sudden loss, and empowering individuals to cultivate self-awareness and resilience.

My own counselling journey began in education and cross-cultural support, where I witnessed the profound strength of individuals navigating transition and adversity. Born and raised in China, I moved to Vancouver in 2006, and my immigrant experience deeply informs my practice. I am passionate about offering culturally attuned support, particularly to immigrants, Mandarin speakers, and international students, around issues of cultural adjustment, identity, belonging, and shifting family dynamics. It is a privilege to walk alongside clients as they move toward healing, connection, and renewed purpose.

Therapeutic Approach

My practice is grounded in a fusion of evidence-based Western modalities and timeless Eastern philosophy. I am trained and draw in EMDR (in training), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), always within a trauma-informed, client-centered, and culturally attuned framework.

My approach is deeply inspired by ancient wisdom, for example, the Daoist teaching of the highest virtue is like water. Water nourishes all things with humility and adapts to any container without force. In this spirit, I strive to create a therapeutic space that is fluid, nurturing, and resilient. I integrate practical tools from CBT and DBT with somatic and mindfulness practices, helping clients regulate emotions, reshape limiting narratives, and cultivate self-compassion. Whether working with individuals, couples, or youth, I honor your unique path and empower you to access your innate strength and growth potential, moving with you toward healing and meaningful change.
