Sunny Sun

Background
Hi, I’m Sunny. I’m a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. I work with individuals, youth, couples, and older adults who are navigating life’s challenges and looking for support, clarity, or change.
Clients often come to me when they’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or carrying something heavy, whether that is past trauma, grief, relationship struggles, or major life transitions. I have experience supporting survivors of family violence, individuals processing loss, and those working toward a stronger sense of self, stability, and resilience.
My approach is both practical and holistic. I draw from evidence based Western therapies while also integrating Eastern perspectives, offering a balanced way of understanding both the mind and the body. Together, we focus not only on reducing distress, but also on building insight, self trust, and meaningful change.
My own path into counselling began through work in education and cross cultural settings, where I saw how much strength people carry even in the face of uncertainty and adversity. Originally from China, I moved to Vancouver in 2006, and my experience as an immigrant continues to shape how I show up in this work. I offer culturally attuned support for clients navigating identity, belonging, family expectations, and life between cultures. I also welcome Mandarin speaking clients and international students who may feel more comfortable expressing themselves in their native language.
Above all, I see therapy as a collaborative process, one where you don’t have to have everything figured out to begin.
Therapeutic Approach
My work is grounded in a trauma informed, client centered approach. I draw from modalities such as EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and tailor each session to your needs and goals.
In our work together, you can expect a space that feels steady, supportive, and non judgmental. I integrate tools from CBT and DBT alongside mindfulness and body based practices to help you better understand your emotions, shift unhelpful patterns, and respond to challenges in more grounded ways.
I’m also influenced by Eastern philosophy, particularly the idea of moving with flexibility and compassion rather than force. In practice, this means we go at a pace that feels right for you, while gently working toward growth and change.
Whether you’re looking to process something difficult, improve your relationships, or simply understand yourself more deeply, I’m here to support you in a way that feels respectful, collaborative, and aligned with who you are.
