Raymond Dilag

Background

My name is Raymond Dilag (he/him), and I am an Intern Counsellor at Avery Therapy Centre. I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, and immigrated to Canada in 2009. As an immigrant, I have firsthand experience with the challenges of cultural adjustment, identity, and belonging. My journey of self-exploration has deepened my understanding of the self and the ways in which our lived experiences shape our identity. Through this process, I developed a deep appreciation for the courage and commitment required to challenge our existing beliefs and the internal work required for personal growth and transformation.

Growing up, I developed a keen awareness of my surroundings, which fostered my curiosity about people’s worldviews and motivations. This curiosity led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a career as a paralegal, where I worked closely with individuals facing complex legal challenges. Through this experience, I gained valuable insight into the critical connection between mental health and one’s overall well-being. Nearly a decade in the legal field solidified my passion for understanding and helping others, inspiring me to transition into the field of counselling where I can further provide meaningful guidance and support.

Therapeutic Approach

I understand how therapy can be overwhelming, which is why I am committed to providing a safe, nonjudgmental, and collaborative space where we can explore and develop the authentic self. I honour your lived experiences, and I take a person-centered approach to counselling, recognizing that everyone has the innate strength and capacity to navigate life’s challenges. Through greater self-awareness, compassion, and resilience, my goal is to support you in developing a deeper connection with your authentic self.

I also take an integrative approach to counselling, tailoring methods to meet your unique therapeutic needs and goals. My practice is primarily informed by Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, offering a balanced framework that is both structured and flexible. This allows us to navigate challenges and build a foundation for your personal growth and well-being. My aim is to empower and provide you with the tools and insights needed to support you and your healing journey. I look forward to hearing your story and collaborating with you!
