Christina Chu

Background

Hi there, my name is Christina and I am a graduate counsellor with Avery Therapy Center. I was born in China and immigrated to Canada with my parents as a child. Since then, I've lived all over Canada in both small Northern communities and large cities, finally settling in Metro Vancouver. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Applied Science from UBC, and spent time working in Canada, U.S., Japan and China. I am grateful for my exposure to different cultures and workplaces as they have not only granted me an appreciation for different cultural nuances and values. I believe there is no one right way to do things, and that we all have something unique to offer to this world.

I eventually came to realize what I truly value above all was human connection and community. I have been a crisis line volunteer for over 2 years, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Counselling degree at City University in Vancouver in order to take on a role where I can be there for others in their time of need. I believe in the transformative power of therapy and the immense potential within each individual to create meaningful change. My goal is to provide a place where my clients can truly be themselves. I am dedicated to walking alongside you on your journey towards mental and emotional well-being, supporting you every step of the way.

Therapeutic Approach

My approach to counseling emphasizes active listening, empathy, and creating a safe space where clients feel heard and valued. The main therapeutic modalities that inform my practice are Person-centred therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-focused therapy (EFT), as well as Gottman and Emotionally-focused therapy (EFT) for couples. I am also interested in incorporating Eye Movement Desensitization Therapy (EMDR) and other mindfulness/somatic-based therapies.

I approach everything through a trauma-informed, multicultural lens. I am dedicated to continuous professional development and am enthusiastic about learning different evidence-based practices. I work in an integrative, flexible manner and will work with you to find an approach that best suits you. Reaching out for support is a courageous step, and I hope to provide a safe, non-judgemental space for you to explore your feelings, gain clarity, and develop coping strategies, empowering you to navigate this world with greater resilience and confidence.
