Nature Based Therapy

Nature-based therapy is an experiential and holistic healing modality that focuses on the relationship between client, therapist, and one’s natural surroundings. From this lens, nature is not simply used for personal gain or as a separate resource, but rather integrated within the therapeutic process so as to cultivate our connectedness to nature which is seen as an extension of oneself.

As nature as co-therapist, the struggles and challenges one is facing will be supported through the reconnection and immersion with the natural environment. There is an understanding that nature and its elements are deeply related to our own psychological states as human beings whereby one can find meaning, strength, and belongingness by fostering this partnership with nature.

Nature-based counselling may vary between clients, depending on the client’s initial relationship with nature and level of safety in the outdoors. Sessions may include office-based sessions with elements of nature being brought inside or may be primarily outside in the natural environment. The therapist will be sure to talk to the client in-depth so as to ensure that safety for the client is maintained at all times in every environment.

As a nature-based practitioner, it is acknowledged that we are gathered on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples–Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. We recognize that local and First Nation Peoples have maintained deep relationships with the land and the Earth as a place of healing and so it is important that we make it a priority to engage in practices that are culturally appropriate for the therapist and client so as to continue to respect the rituals and practices of other cultures.
