Melanie Buchanan

Background
Hi, I’m Melanie (sheher). I’m an Intern Counsellor at Avery Therapy Centre and a Registered Social Worker. I am currently completing my Master of Counselling at City University in Canada and hold a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of British Columbia.
Growing up between cultures Filipino and Jamaican has shaped how I understand identity, belonging, and the complexity of holding multiple parts of ourselves. I know how challenging it can feel to navigate different expectations and environments, and how meaningful it is to have a space where all parts of you are welcomed and accepted.
My own experience in therapy has been both vulnerable and transformative. I understand how difficult it can be to open up and trust someone with your story. For a long time, I believed I had to handle things on my own, but I have come to see that reaching for support is a powerful and courageous step. This experience continues to guide how I show up with empathy, care, and a deep respect for each person’s journey.
In addition to my work at Avery Therapy Centre, I have supported individuals and families in community and social service settings through life transitions and emotional challenges. These experiences have strengthened my belief that healing happens through connection, when people feel safe, understood, and supported.
Outside of counselling, I enjoy spending time with family, playing piano, baking, and crocheting at home with my three fur babies.
Therapeutic Approach
I believe therapy should feel supportive, collaborative, and tailored to you. There is no single way therapy should look. Together, we will find an approach that fits your needs, your pace, and what feels most helpful for you.
My work is grounded in a trauma informed and strengths based perspective. I draw from evidence based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, and Solution Focused Therapy. I also incorporate parts work, also known as Internal Family Systems, which can help you better understand the different aspects of yourself and how they interact.
I aim to create a space that feels warm, non judgmental, and steady, where you can explore your thoughts and emotions openly, build insight, and reconnect with yourself. My goal is to support you in making sense of your experiences, navigating challenges, and moving toward meaningful and lasting change.
