Jaylynn Henry (she/her)

Jaylynn Henry

Background

My name is Jaylynn Henry and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor. I was born and raised in the lower mainland. I am lucky to have an amazing mom who let me explore and grow by supporting me and who I am. My house was full of animals and music- a tradition she still maintains. Playing hockey and going to concerts are just a couple of things on my list of things that bring me joy.

When I was 17 I realized I wanted to grow up and become a sex therapist. I went to Douglas College for my Associates Degree and then Simon Fraser University for my Bachelors Degree. During my time at SFU I dove into volunteering at research labs which afforded me the opportunity to present at the SSSS conference. During this time I really got to get a glimpse into the world of sex therapy and it solidified my love for the profession and specialization.

Therapeutic Approach

My hope is that my clients feel safe to be vulnerable and use the therapeutic space however they need to. I will do my best to make sure to do everything I can to make that possible.

During my practicum at The Adler Centre I got to explore different approaches and therapeutic methodologies. I learned that at this point in my training there is not one approach I identify with, but many. My style is eclectic which means I mix and match different theories so that they fit my client better. I make sure that if a method or intervention is not working or feeling right for them that we change it up and find what suits them best. With that said, my philosophies around counselling in general are that the client should be met with respect and unconditional positive regard. The counselling space is the one place in the world where there are no rules or judgement and we can say or feel whatever we want to, and that should be cherished and supported.
