My name is Jane Ngo (she/her) and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor at Avery Therapy Centre. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care from the University of Victoria, wherein I specialized in Child Life to become a Certified Child Life Specialist. My undergraduate studies led me into the unknown halls of a children’s hospital, where I offer psychosocial support to children, youth, and families using play as a therapeutic modality. I offer counselling to individuals of all ages, specializing in child and adolescent mental health. I also offer relationship counselling to romantic partners in various types of relationships (open, polyamorous, consensual non monogamy, etc.)
My personal experiences have called on me to venture onto a journey of self-discovery by becoming a counsellor. I feel fortunate to have met many heroes on my journey of all ages and backgrounds. I am drawn to the privileged work of being alongside someone on their own journeys of reconnecting with themselves and surpassing life’s greatest ordeals. I have gained a collection of treasured memories and experiences by working with individuals dealing with trauma, hospitalization, acute and chronic pain, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, and disconnection to themselves.
My approach to therapy comes from a person-centered theory. I wish to be a companion alongside someone’s emotional experience by facilitating a warm and empathic climate wherein in positive change occurs. My greatest hope as a counsellor is to act as a person who truly sees, hears, and understands another person.
I integrate a strength-based approach and a trauma and culture informed lens into my practice so that everyone I meet feels respected, valued, and seen as a unique person. I incorporate a mindfulness-based approach by supporting people to build connections between their mind and body to cope with pain and gain awareness and gentle acceptance of their bodily sensations to triggering events. I lean on emotion-focused therapy to support individuals in developing greater awareness of their emotions and effective communication skills in interpersonal relationships. Finally, I share my learning from my personal and professional experiences through my love of writing so that readers from all areas of the world may feel a sense of connection and understanding to universal human experiences.
