Anger Management Counselling at Avery
Anger management counselling at Avery Therapy Centre helps you understand what sets your anger off and what happens in your body and mind when it rises. You build ways to respond that fit the person you want to be. Sessions are offered in person at our downtown Vancouver offices on Homer Street and Granville Street, and online anywhere in British Columbia, with registered clinical counsellors and supervised counsellors in training.
Anger is a normal emotion, and feeling it is not the problem. People usually reach out when the way anger comes out has started to cost them something: a relationship, a job, their health, or their sense of themselves. If you'd like background on anger itself, our page What Is Anger? covers the signs, causes and the difference between anger and aggression.
When People Come to Us for Help With Anger
Most clients don't arrive saying "I have an anger problem." They come because something keeps happening. For example:
-
Arguments with a partner escalate fast and end with things said that can't be taken back.
-
Irritation builds all week, then spills out at home over something small.
-
A manager or coworker has raised how you come across in meetings.
-
You shut down or go cold instead of saying what you feel, then resent it later.
-
After an outburst you feel ashamed, and you're tired of the cycle.
-
Anger sits on top of something else, such as stress, grief, old hurt or trauma.
Any of these is a reasonable place to start. You don't need to have hurt anyone, and you don't need a diagnosis.
What Anger Management Counselling Involves at Avery
The first sessions are about understanding your own pattern: the situations that set it off, the early signs in your body, the thoughts that come with it, and what tends to happen next. From there, the work usually moves in a few directions at once:
-
Slowing the moment down. Noticing the early cues and having ways to pause, so you have more choice in how you respond.
-
Looking underneath. Anger often protects something more vulnerable, such as hurt, fear, shame or exhaustion. Naming that can change how the anger shows up.
-
Practising different responses. Trying new ways to set limits, ask for what you need and disagree without escalating, then reviewing how it went.
-
Repairing. Where anger has strained a relationship, thinking through how to repair it and rebuild trust.
Counsellors draw on approaches that fit you. You set the pace, and you can bring in what is happening in your week as it happens.
When Anger Affects Your Relationship
Anger often shows up most with the people we are closest to. Some clients work on anger individually first. Others want to work on it with their partner, through couples counselling or relationship therapy, where both people can look at the cycle they get caught in together. If anger is tied to past experiences, trauma counselling may be part of the work, and individual counselling can hold several concerns at once.
Who You'll Work With
If you're not sure who to choose, therapist matching can suggest someone based on what you're looking for and when you're available. Avery's team is LGBTQ2S+ affirming, and the Homer Street and Granville Street listings are both marked as transgender safe spaces.
