My name is Kerena Lam and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor working and residing on the Unceded Coast Salish territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam nations (Vancouver), where I was also born and raised. As a queer person of color and a member of the LGBTQ2S+ community, I am passionate about serving diverse populations and providing a safe, confidential space for individuals to discuss their personal stories and the challenges they face. I bring high levels of empathy, unconditional positive regard, and understanding without judgement to my counselling relationships.
I previously worked in the field of human resources for 18 years in various sectors and countries (including China, the Netherlands, and Brazil). My work required high levels of empathy, strong interpersonal skills, active listening, cross-cultural awareness and understanding, as well as the ability to build good rapport and establish trust easily. I have always endeavoured to establish a safe environment for all individuals to feel listened to, and where they can share their feelings and needs. When I turned 40, I decided to change careers and transition to the field of counselling, which has been a relatively smooth process due to transferable skill sets and my strong dedication to serve the public.
In my clinical counselling experience, I have worked alongside individuals who have suffered from diverse issues that ranged from (complex) trauma, anxiety, depression, overwhelming emotions, chronic pain and illness, low self-worth, relationship conflicts, substance use, grief, negative body image and identity-related challenges. I have been truly inspired by the resilience I have witnessed in each of my clients, and am honoured to have been a fellow traveller on their healing journey.
I offer individual and relationship counselling using a trauma-informed, strength-based, client-centered approach. Therapy is a collaborative journey and we will work together using therapeutic methods that work best for you. I draw from a variety of complementary approaches, which are tailored to each client's individual needs. These include, but are not limited to, Adlerian Therapy (a holistic, forward looking approach that considers each person within the context of their total experience), Intersectional Feminism, Mindfulness-Based Somatic Therapy and Solutions-Focused Therapy. I am also a trained EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapist.
In addition, I am certified in Gottman’s Couples Therapy and provide couples counselling for those in monogamous, non-monogamous, polyamorous, and kink relationships. I am also certified in Adlerian Parenting (also known as the STEP approach to parenting), and offer counselling to parents/caregivers. COVID-19 restrictions have been collectively difficult for all of us, and those in relationships and with children at home may especially benefit from counselling support during these trying times.
My availability can be found here. I'm currently only offering online video counselling at this time.
