Jessica Banert

Background

My name is Jessica Banert, and I was born in Calgary, Alberta but I am now grateful to call Vancouver home. I am currently completing my master’s degree in counselling psychology and I hold an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Law and Society. I work in collaboration with individuals from all walks and stages of life who may need support along their journey, and I am always honoured to be a part of that journey.

I have always been passionate about the world and all of the diversity within it. I have had the privilege of traveling to many different parts of the world and spent a chapter of my life living in Australia. My time there allowed me to grow and flourish as a person and develop my deep gratitude for my connection to nature and all that it has to teach us about life. My experiences working and volunteering abroad and at home, gave me a wonderful opportunity to witness both the highs and lows of the human experience and to further garner the skills I believe make me an effective counsellor. Thus far, my journey has shown me that as human beings we are resilient and we have a deep desire to connect, to thrive, and to find what is meaningful to us. My hope is that I can create a space for all those that I work with to feel more connected to themselves, their world, and those around them.

Therapeutic Approach

It is first and foremost my priority as your counsellor to create a space where you feel heard, understood, and accepted for who you are and where you are at on your healing journey. I recognize that it can feel daunting to allow someone else into our innermost world and it is my intention that our time together will be built on trust and safety and our discussions will always be free of judgement.

The foundation for my work is from a strength-based, trauma and culture informed lens, and I celebrate all of the uniqueness that each individual brings. I believe that because each individual is unique, the approach to counselling must be as well. Depending on what your needs are, I will draw from complimentary evidence-based practices including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Somatic Experiencing. We will work collaboratively to establish which approach will work best for you and the treatment path that will be most helpful for you. Through our work together I will guide you to develop the skills and tools to move more freely within your life, with more self-compassion, resilience, and connection.

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”
